Doctor Who – Who?

A British TV show debuted in 1963 with imagination, humor, horror, and deep issues.  It is now a global phenomenon.  The doctor’s 13 regenerations explore the universe: past, present, and future.   The Doctor and companions travel in a TARDIS, using wits and a sonic screwdriver to fight Daleks in an eternal Time-War, Cyber-men, Weeping Angels, and the brilliant nemesis, The Master.

In its first 60 years, Dr. Who has gone from a children’s show to something for the whole family.  Children still watch the monsters from behind their family couch.  Fans remember doing so even as they watch their own grandchildren do so.

Adults revel in its imagination and sit transfixed trying to understand where any episode is going, until, at last they understand.

You’ll be able to understand the wonder of the phrase, “It’s bigger on the inside than on the outside”, and perhaps laugh at the phrase’s twist, “The outside is smaller than the inside.”   That’s the TARDIS – Time and Relative Dimension in Space, a description from the first episode, which is still central to the show.

The number of Doctors is a subject of discussion among Whovians — the fans.   Are there 14… or more… except there is only one Doctor Who.   A famous episode is “The Library,” in which the Doctor meets his wife in the library — before he meets her, so he does not know her.  Time Travel at its best — and it only gets better, as when he goes to visit Vincent van Gogh.  What a great episode!!!

The Whoniverse is complex, and wonderful to visit.
